A new application programming interface is being tested by WebKit that would allow browser operators to see when users are logged in to a website in Safari, AdExchanger reports. If a browser operator can see whether a user is logged in to a site, it could make specific decisions about first-party cookies. If a user is logged in, "cookies could have a longer lifespan, for example, while cookies associated with anonymous traffic could either have a shorter timeline or be automatically purged," according to the report. Whether the technology could become a standard for other browsers is unknown.
