Rwandan Minister for Justice and Attorney General Johnston Busingye’s announcement to create the world’s first countrywide DNA database was met with concern, The Independent reports. The database would include DNA samples from the country’s 12 million citizens but has raised concerns from some that the data could be misused by the government and violate international human rights laws. Busingye said the database would be used to combat crime and added, “We will examine global best practice on the issue, propose appropriate law and implement accordingly.”
