U.S. intelligence has discovered that Russia is considering returning whistleblower Edward Snowden to the U.S. in an attempt to "curry favor" with President Donald Trump. Snowden's ACLU lawyer, Ben Wizner, however, said the team had heard no word about returning Snowden to the U.S. and was therefore unconcerned with rumors. Snowden himself responded to reports, calling them "irrefutable evidence" that he didn't work with Russian intelligence. If the whispers are true, former deputy national security advisor Juan Zarate urges Trump to be cautious. The move "would signal warmer relations and some desire for greater cooperation with the new administration, but it would also no doubt stoke controversies and cases in the U.S. around the role of surveillance, the role of the U.S. intelligence community, and the future of privacy and civil liberties in an American context."
