In what it says is an effort to block the spread of extremist material, Russia’s State Duma passed a bill outlawing the use of virtual private networks and other proxy services to access state-blocked websites, VOA reports. This is viewed by some, however, as part of an ongoing effort to crack-down on internet freedoms. Russia already has a data localization law in place, mandating that companies processing data on Russian citizens be stored on servers located in the country. The anti-VPN bill must now pass the upper chamber of parliament and be signed into effect by the president.
