A group of British and Danish researchers said surveillance footage can be used to better understand human behavior, Vice reports. The researchers recently published a study using government closed-circuit TV footage from cities in England, Denmark and South Africa, seeking to answer questions about which data-gathering techniques are ineffective, such as how likely it is a bystander will come to your aid if you are attacked in public. Lasse Liebst, co-author of the research and sociologist at the University of Copenhagen, said CCTV has “great potential but it’s painfully under-utilized.” He hopes the research will improve public education and policy to make city spaces safer.
