New research suggests security and privacy worries “are likely impeding the widespread use of thousands of mobile health applications since an overwhelming majority require access to sensitive personal data,” FierceMobileGovernment reports. A team of researchers from Germany’s University of Cologne reviewed more than 24,400 English-language smartphone and tablet apps available in 2013. Nearly 95 percent of the apps “could cause ‘potential damage’ to users' security and privacy through information leaks, manipulation, loss and value to third parties,” the report states. The researchers recommend app developers “be sensitized to potential threats” the researchers said, and focus on improved security and privacy protections.
