A group of researchers called plans by Apple and the European Union to detect illicit material on devices "dangerous technology," The New York Times reports. Apple's now delayed plans would scan images uploaded to its iCloud storage service to detect images of child sexual abuse, while an anticipated proposal in the EU would detect similar images on encrypted devices. "It should be a national-security priority to resist attempts to spy on and influence law-abiding citizens," the researchers said.
