New research has found evidence of racial bias in a health care algorithm that predicts the health risks of black patients, Government Technology reports. The findings, determined to stem from "a faulty human assumption" in how the algorithm was designed, "have far-reaching implications for the health and welfare of Americans as we become increasingly reliant on computers to turn raw data into useful information," the report states. Meanwhile, Modern Healthcare reports the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services proposes lessening patient privacy protections for substance use disorder records for providers to better address the opioid crisis, and The Associated Press reports potentially 152,000 patients have been affected by a data breach at a St. Louis health center serving the needy and uninsured.
