Reps. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., Diana DeGette, D-Co., and Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., introduced the Secure Data and Privacy for Contact Tracing Act. The bill would provide grants to states that adopt strong privacy protections for users as they develop contact-tracing systems. For a state to receive a grant, they must ensure all contact-tracing tech is strictly voluntary and for all data to be minimized and proportionate to what is needed for contact tracing efforts. Sens. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii., and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., introduced companion legislation in the Senate.
