An analysis by health care compliance analytics firm Protenus found health care data breaches nearly tripled in 2019, with more than 41 million patient records breached, FierceHealthcare reports. In 2018, breaches impacted 15 million patient records. Fifty-eight percent of the total breaches in 2019 were the result of hacking incidents, impacting 36.9 million patient records. Breaches of patient privacy have also increased, from 450 security incidents involving patient data in 2016 to 572 incidents in 2019.
