The Canadian federal government made 5,670 privacy breaches in 2015, affecting 45,797 people, CTV News reports. Of those breaches, 305 were serious enough to be reported to the privacy commissioner and affected 17,059 people. The Canada Revenue Agency had the highest amount of breaches of government agencies, accounting for 69 percent of all the incidents, with those numbers rising to 73.9 percent of affected individuals. The CRA said it has “extensive internal systems” to protect taxpayer information. The agency cited misdirected mail as the most common privacy mistake, as more than 40,000 employees handle around 115 million pieces of mail a year. Other breaches include missing USB drives, stolen laptops, and a lost hard drive containing over 500,000 student loan receipts.
