A new report from London-based charity Privacy International says big tech companies are not providing “adequate transparency for global users” regarding political advertising on their sites, Reuters reports. The report claims that many users worldwide are unclear how ads are targeted to different groups on social media. The companies have shared more information on political ads when scrutiny intensified after U.S. intelligence agencies found Russia targeted American voters in the 2016 elections. The group found Google “especially deficient” in disclosing ad-targeting information to users. The European Commission is expected to release its own report later this year on how tech companies are following its self-regulator Code of Practice on Disinformation.
