The number of patient records compromised in data breaches rose in the second quarter of 2018, Healthcare Informatics reports. According to the Protenus Breach Barometer, more than 3.14 million patient records were exposed in 142 data breaches from April to June 2018, up from the 1.13 million records compromised in the first quarter of the year. Of the breaches disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or the media, 30.9 percent of the incidents were the result of an insider threat. Meanwhile, the National Governors Association is working with eight states on an initiative to better improve health care data sharing.
