The Financial Times reports on "people search engines" and the problems individuals face when they attempt to have their information removed from the sites. People search engines collect names, addresses, details of lawsuits and photos. The data is collected from public records, social media profiles, paid-for databases and, more recently, genealogy sites, such as Ancestry.com. Some listed on the search engines have tried to remove the data from the sites; however, they are either asked to pay a fee or must wait months before their request is honored. Organizations that have monitored the broker sites find the information often reappears within months. (Registration may be required to access this story.)
