The Toowoomba Regional Council has begun testing facial recognition technology, dubbed iOmniscient, on behalf of the Gold Coast, Brisbane and other councils, a move that has troubled privacy advocates, ABC News reports. The technology analyzes pre-existing CCTV cameras' images. While TRC representatives, who are testing the tool in a public library, say the device is not about eroding privacy but instead "improving service delivery," not everyone agrees. Queensland University of Technology's Monique Mann sees the testing as a slippery slope. iOmniscient tech "can be integrated with existing surveillance systems as we're seeing with CCTV-enabled tracking through public faces," she said. "And it can also be integrated with other big data that's used for law enforcement and security purposes — so for example images that can be taken from social media websites."
