The Real Estate Institute of Australia opposes certain reforms to the Privacy Act on the grounds they may harm small businesses, the Guardian reports. The REIA called on the government to include a small business exemption to the Privacy Act and claimed "an estimated two-thirds of agencies with a turnover" less than AUD3 million would be subject to the law and its enhanced penalties. REIA President Hayden Groves said removing a small business exemption in the Privacy Act "might not bring tangible benefits to consumers, while adding unnecessary additional risks on small businesses."
