A draft government bill aimed at aligning Irish law with the upcoming EU General Data Protection Regulation proposes the appointment of two additional data protection authorities as the regulatory workload is expected to dramatically increase with the GDPR, The Irish Times reports. The draft bill would rename the agency as the Data Protection Commission and establish at least one but no more than three commissioners. One of the three appointed commissioners would be named chairperson. Under the GDPR's one-stop-shop mechanism, Ireland will likely be a lead authority for a number of U.S.-based tech companies, including Facebook, LinkedIn and Apple. "The possibility of stringent sanctions ... will require the separation of the investigative and adjudicative processes within the commission and will impose a significant additional workload on the commissioner," according to notes in the draft law.
