A proposed data breach notification bill is drawing criticism from retailers and consumer advocates, Bloomberg reports. The proposed bill currently backed by Reps. Blaine Luetkemeyer, R-Mo., and Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., would require certain companies to immediately notify customers "without unreasonable delay" if they are at risk following a data breach. Critics of the bill are displeased that financial institutions would not be covered, as they adhere to the 1999 Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act. "If you do a Swiss cheese notification structure, where only some businesses are required to notify and not all, then the consumer doesn’t really know who is putting their data at risk," National Retail Federation Senior Vice President for Government Relations David French said.
