  • The Council of the European Union’s proposed Artificial Intelligence Act would enable those acting on behalf of law enforcement authorities to operate biometric surveillance systems, Statewatch reports. The proposal also extends the purposes under which systems can be used, including preventing threats to “critical infrastructure” or an individual’s “life, health or physical safety.”
  • Access Now, along with more than 110 civil society organizations, suggested steps needed to improve the proposal's human rights standards. “Access Now’s priority is not to have an EU law on AI, but to have one that is an effective instrument to protect people’s rights,” Access Now Europe Policy Manager Fanny Hidvégi said.
