Contrary to author and recent IAPP keynote speaker Julia Angwin’s assertion that privacy has become a “luxury good,” Robert Ellis Smith says maintaining privacy has cost him less than $50 and only a few hours a year. In an article for Privacy Journal, Smith says strategies such as protecting your Social Security number at all times, avoiding high-priced services and changing your modes of communication every day—sometimes e-mailing, sometimes calling, sometimes texting—can keep you safe on the cheap.
