Information and privacy commissioners around Canada published a joint resolution calling for the federal government to require political parties to disclose the personal information they possess on voters, The Globe and Mail reports. The commissioners also want political parties to allow for independent oversight to ensure voters’ privacy rights are respected. The resolution states the use of digital tools to gather information on citizens without their consent launched the need to rein in political parties. “Information about our political views is highly sensitive and it’s clearly unacceptable that federal and provincial political parties are not subject to privacy laws,” Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien said.
