Oakland, California’s Privacy Advisory Commission has moved closer to voting on its Stingray and Hailstorm surveillance tool policy, SFGate reports. The future use of both devices relies on the approval of this policy, which was borne after the October 2015 California law mandating “every county sheriff and city police department that deploys a Stingray to get a warrant before it is used and approve and publish a usage and privacy policy online,” the report states. “The city of Oakland has been working since then to draft one for the OPD.” Editor’s Note: Jedidiah Bracy, CIPP, reports on the letter by 12 U.S. senators urging the Federal Communications Commission to investigate surveillance via Stingray, and whether the devices target minorities for The Privacy Advisor.
