Representatives from the Liberal, Conservative and New Democratic parties faced questions from the Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics on political parties’ use of data, CBC News reports. Privacy laws currently do not cover Canadian political parties. NDP MP Nathan Cullen said the 2019 election will go on without those enforceable rules at a time when outside parties look to affect the results. "I'm not particularly worried based on what I heard today about the data collection practices of parties, all things considered, of the NDP, the Liberal Party and the Conservative Party," Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith said. "I do worry about third-party political activities that don't have the same accountability to the public, that are more fly by night and disappear tomorrow." Meanwhile, Privacy Commissioner of Canada Daniel Therrien said the next election will face "important risks" if political parties are not covered by privacy laws.
