Following last June’s Supreme Court ruling that law enforcement needs a warrant to access the subscriber information held by Internet service providers (ISPs), the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police is lobbying for another way to get the information it says its members need to solve crimes, reports The Canadian Press. In a newly published document, the group argues for an administrative scheme, or some new judicial order process, that would allow law enforcement to access subscriber data in real time. Criminal investigations, the paper says, are “often delayed and in some cases not pursued” because of the time it takes to get a warrant.
