In an attempt to solve a homicide, the Ontario Provincial Police issued a mass text to approximately 7,500 citizens, but, CBC News reports, the move has raised privacy concerns. Investigators call the move digital canvassing, but privacy and legal thinkers question what the police could do with the collected information after the investigation. The police obtained the phone numbers through a cell tower after obtaining a court order. The OPP has also said no other data was supplied to the agency other than the phone numbers and that they received helpful information to help solve the crime. Privacy lawyer David Fraser expressed concerns about the future use of the data, while Ryerson University's Ann Cavoukian said she would like to see "strong controls" around such a practice.
