Before the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, the New South Wales Law Enforcement Conduct Commission and Australian Commission for Law Enforcement Integrity rejected calls to reduce the country’s data retention period from two years to a maximum of six months, ZDNet reports. The groups said the reduction could compromise investigations, many of which require access to historical data. LECC Electronic Collection Director Shane Butler said telecommunications data is a “fundamental tool” that law enforcement relies “heavily on.”
