Speaking at an IAPPanz event last week, Australian Privacy Commissioner Timothy Pilgrim warned that businesses that de-identify data still need to treat it as personal data, ITNews reports. “The current challenge facing all organisations that handle large data sets is that data sets of ‘anonymous data’ are fast becoming identifiable,” he said, adding, “Personal information is not just that which does identify you, but that which may.” Pilgrim continued, “So my advice to prudent organisations would be to work on the assumption that such data is personal information.” The Australian government, the report points out, is currently considering an amendment to its welfare laws that would make it legal for the government to release de-identified payment records for policy makers and researchers.
