The National Privacy Commission of the Philippines is backing the creation of a national ID system, called the Philippine Identification System, PTV reports. The proposed national ID system would allow for “disclosure, collection and recording of information of registered persons” in several instances and help connect Filipinos to services in which proof of identification is necessary. At a press briefing, NPC Commissioner Raymund Liboro worked to assure the public that there are measures in place to protect personally identifiable information. Once ratified by Congress, President Rodrigo Duterte will sign the bill into law, establishing PhilSys. The bill aims to integrate approximately 30 redundant government IDs.
