Last month, the European Commission and the U.S. Department of Commerce conducted their second annual joint review of the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield agreement in Brussels. "The review revealed, among other things, that European data subjects are simply not filing complaints under the Shield's dispute resolution scheme," writes VeraSafe Head of Privacy, Data Protection, and Cybersecurity Practice Matthew Joseph, CIPP/E, CIPP/US. In this exclusive for Privacy Perspectives, Joseph, whose organization was asked by the DOC to speak "during a session focused on Privacy Shield dispute resolution," describes his experience at the review and offers up some reasoning for why there have thus far been so few disputes filed by EU data subjects since Shield came into force.
