Ashley Winton 

Ashley Winton

International law firm McDermott Will & Emery announces that Ashley Winton, specialist in data protection and privacy, information governance and cybersecurity compliance, has joined the firm’s London office as a partner in its global cybersecurity and data privacy practice. Previously, Winton advised clients on a range of data privacy issues, with particular experience on the impact of privacy and cyber security law on cloud services, telecommunications and international data transfers. Winton is a fellow of the Ponemon Institute and current chairman of the U.K. Data Protection Forum. 


Peter McLaughlin

Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Attorney Peter McLaughlin, CIPP/US, has joined Burns & Levinson as a partner in its intellectual property group. Previously, McLaughlin was counsel with DLA Piper in Boston. Burns & Levinson Managing Partner David Rosenblatt said, "Privacy and data security are issues that our clients across all industries are grappling with, and Peter brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our clients." McLaughlin has nearly 20 years of experience advising U.S. and international clients on complying with data security and privacy obligations.

Liisa Thomas has joined Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP and will be based in their Chicago office as a co-leader of the firm's privacy and cybersecurity practice. Previously, Thomas chaired the global privacy and data security practice at Winston & Strawn LLP and has more than twenty years of experience advising clients on privacy law. Chairman Guy Halgren said, "Liisa is sought out across the globe by corporations for her deep expertise in privacy and data security issues," adding that the hire was part of a strategic plan to expand capabilities in areas needed most by clients.


Seth Berman

Seth Berman has joined Boston law firm Nutter McClennen & Fish as a leader in its Privacy and Data Security practice group, as well as being a member of the firm’s White Collar Defense practice group. Berman brings more than 20 years of experience with him. Previously, Berman spent 10 years with cybersecurity and digital forensics investigations consulting firm Stroz Friedberg, where he consulted companies on cybersecurity issues. Deborah Manus, a managing partner at Nutter, described, “Seth brings to Nutter and our clients the unique combination of government experience as a former federal prosecutor and in his most current role, as an adviser to corporations on how to prepare for or respond to a possible data breach.”


Jeanne Kelly

Dublin-based corporate and commercial firm LK Shields has announced the appointment of Jeanne Kelly as a partner in their intellectual property, technology and data privacy team. Kelly has had a commercial and technology practice for 20 years, advising public and private clients in relation to technology law, including data protection and GDPR preparedness. Kelly has led data protection compliance programs for some of Ireland’s leading corporates, as well as for multinationals.


Patricia Adusei-Poku, CIPM

Patricia Adusei-Poku, CIPM, is now the executive director for Ghana’s Data Protection Commission. A release issued by the Ministry of Communications in Accra said she has taken up the position with a “unique blend of executive acumen, global teamwork with strong operational and front-line experience in Information Governance and expertise in Data Protection Programme Management.” Previously, Adusei-Poku acted as head of data protection at the London 2012 Olympic Games and global director for data protection and privacy at World Vision International. 


Laura Irvine

A prominent member of Scottish law firm BTO Solicitors’ Data Protection team, Laura Irvine has been promoted to partner, continuing her work on data protection, cyber risk and compliance matters, which are growing areas of business for the firm. Alan Borthwick, Chairman of BTO, said, “Laura works tirelessly to assist her clients, as well as going above and beyond to share her knowledge and raise awareness of BTO’s expertise across relevant sectors. Her promotion to partner is extremely well deserved, and I have no doubt her dedication to developing BTO’s data protection offering will continue, ably assisted by Lynn.” Irvine also currently sits on the board of the Scottish Business Resilience Centre as an expert in cybersecurity law.


Steven Wernikoff

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, a Detroit-based law firm, announced 17-year veteran of the Federal Trade Commission Steven Wernikoff will lead the firm’s newly launched autonomous vehicle group, as well as its cybersecurity and privacy practice. Most recently, Wernikoff served as enforcement director for the FTC’s Office of Technology Research and Investigation, a division focused on new technologies, such as data collection and autonomous vehicles. “Autonomous vehicle technology really is outpacing existing laws and regulations,” Wernikoff said. “The auto industry is developing to include the whole smart infrastructure, involving mapping, geolocation [and] communications technologies, and each of those items has legal and regulatory implications.”


Wim Nauwelaerts

Wim Nauwelaerts joins Sidley Austin’s Brussels office as a partner and as part of Sidley’s global Privacy and Cybersecurity practice. Nauwelaerts has nearly 20 years experience in privacy and data protection, advising companies on all aspects of EU and international data protection and privacy compliance. Alan Raul, founder and co-leader of Sidley’s global Privacy and Cybersecurity practice, said, “We have seen tremendous growth in our European data protection practice, which will continue as companies prepare for, and thereafter comply with, the GDPR.”


Robert Litt

Robert Litt

Robert Litt, who previously served as the general counsel for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, has joined Morrison & Foerster. Litt will help support the firm’s national security, global risk and crisis management, and global privacy and data security groups. Litt will advise clients on national security and privacy matters, white collar investigations, and government enforcement actions. As the former lead lawyer at the ODNI, Litt was part of the U.S. team that negotiated the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield with the European Commission and also engaged with individual European nations on related privacy matters. 


Anthony Gardner

Anthony Gardner has joined the law firm Sidley Austin as senior counsel and will be a member of the firm’s international trade and privacy and cybersecurity practices. Previously, Gardner was the U.S. ambassador to the European Union and was among those who worked on creating the EU-U.S. Privacy Shield for international data transfers. Gardner will be based both in London and Brussels. Before his role as the U.S. ambassador to the EU, Gardner was the managing director for private equity firm Palamon Capital Partners and also served as the director for European affairs on the U.S. National Security Council.
