The New York Times reports that an Irish government committee has been established to select the successor to current Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes. Reporter Mark Scott calls it “a relatively obscure position but one with global sway.” That’s because “Ireland’s data protection watchdog has found itself responsible for protecting the data of a large part of the world’s population,” privacy pro Daragh O’Brien told the paper. The report notes that Hawkes’ deputy, John O’Dwyer, will take over on an interim basis when Hawkes leaves his post at the end of August, but that some commenters, including Max Schrems, the law student behind Europe vs. Facebook, believe Ireland needs not only a new commissioner, but more budget and muscle as well. The office oversees the likes of Facebook, LinkedIn and Apple, with a budget of just $3 million. Editor’s note: Billy Hawkes will serve as a keynote speaker at the IAPP Privacy Academy and CSA Congress in San Jose, CA, in September. Max Schrems will speak at the IAPP Data Protection Congress in Brussels in November.
