In a letter to Members of the European Parliament, European Digital Rights and 52 other organizations called for banning remote biometric identification systems in public locations, Biometric Update reports. They called the technology, like facial recognition, “one of the greatest threats to fundamental rights and democracy that we have ever seen” and advocate for a legal framework to prevent biometric surveillance, including amending the Artificial Intelligence Act to include private and public actors.
