The Technology Analysis Division of the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada has released a new survey of consumer-facing, privacy-enhancing technologies, focusing "on PETs primarily used by law-abiding consumers and citizens seeking to protect their personal information online" and on technologies that protect data in transit, not at rest. The survey includes a taxonomy, categorizing PETs into several functions and capabilities, including informed consent, data minimization, data tracking, anonymity, and control. The OPC also addresses the failure of PETs, reaching the conclusion that they often, among other reasons, fail because "they are considered by average individuals as too complex."
