The Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada announced it has launched an investigation into Statistics Canada’s data-collection practices. Global News reports Statistics Canada has asked banks across the country for the financial transaction data and personal information of 500,000 citizens without their consent in order to build a “new institutional personal information bank.” Privacy Commissioner Daniel Therrien has accepted Statistics Canada’s Chief Statistician’s invitation for the OPC to take a “deeper dive” into the agency’s data-collection efforts. The OPC decided to conduct the investigation after it received complaints about Statistics Canada’s plans.
