In an op-ed, Blake Kaplan explains why Mississippi's Sun Herald is changing the way it covers crime, even though it will likely mean a reduction in revenue for the news organization. Despite generating a high click rate, Kaplan says the Sun Herald is shifting its focus from crime reporting, adding that it had a disproportionate share of news coverage and did not support the core mission of the organization. He adds, the online news source would forgo its “mugshot” gallery and explains that once posted, the images followed individuals forever, whether the person was convicted of the crime or not. “Plenty of people have contacted us over the years to say they were cleared of the crime but that mugshot has prevented them from getting jobs,” Kaplan writes.
