In an op-ed for Bloomberg Opinion, Cathy O’Neil examines the question of how to maintain democracy in an age when governments and companies are committed to collecting troves of data on people. She writes, “The potential accuracy and reach of government surveillance will only increase as the data pile up and the technology improves” and adds that if the discussion surrounding big data and artificial intelligence is framed around a technology race, privacy protection is likely to become “a pesky constraint to the innovation that will bring about the brave new world.” O’Neil warns that Americans are too distracted to take on “a creeping surveillance state” and that collectively, “we need to do better, and soon.”
