In an op-ed for the Brennan Center for Justice, Andrew Lindsay discusses law enforcement’s surveillance efforts against minorities online and on social media. Specifically, Lindsay examines how those efforts have been magnified after attacks such as the one in Dallas, where five police officers were killed. “At times, the government has described the surveillance as mere monitoring, intended to provide ‘situational awareness.’ But it is hardly a stretch to say these forms of ‘monitoring’ hurt free speech,” writes Lindsay. “Just how free and unfettered is speech in a world where liking an event on a Facebook page or retweeting a photo can result in one being subject to a threat assessment?” Editor’s Note: Angelique Carson, CIPP/US, recently wrote about surveillance and minority populations for Privacy Perspectives.
