In an op-ed for MIT Technology Review, Martin Tisné writes about why it is time to create a “Bill of Data Rights.” Tisné believes the concept of “data ownership” is flawed, as it creates new problems rather than fixes old ones. Tisné writes data privacy rights should instead allow users to participate in modern society and develop the self away from commerce and governmental control. The author lists out some of the ideals that should be in place within a “Bill of Data Rights,” such as “the right of the people to be secure against unreasonable surveillance shall not be violated,” and “no person shall have his or her behavior surreptitiously manipulated.”
