In an op-ed for The New York Times, Georgetown Center on Privacy and Technology Senior Associate Clare Garvie explains why the U.S. should stop its use of facial recognition until the technology is properly regulated. While the tech may be seen as "convenient," Garvie points to police databases filled with images of unsuspecting individuals and the levels of manipulation and bias associated with the technology as reasons why the U.S. needs to press pause. "Our privacy, our right to anonymity in public and our right to free speech are in danger," Garvie writes. "Congress must declare a national moratorium on the use of face-recognition technology until legal restrictions limiting its use and scope can be developed."
