In an op-ed for Forbes, Zak Doffman explains why U.K. police should be able to use facial-recognition technology to help fight back against crime, as long as the proper measures are in place to protect the public from misuse. Facial recognition could assist the U.K. as it tackles an increase in gang violence. The Metropolitan Police Service has trialed facial-recognition tech, but with no regulatory framework in place, privacy advocates have spoken out against its use. “It is 2018, the era of AI and intelligent video. And in London, we have a situation where lives can be saved by these technologies,” Doffman writes. “Facial recognition works. It can make people safer. And so it’s time to set some regulations and start making use of it.”
