In an op-ed for MSNBC, Opinion Columnist Tiffany Li writes, following the Sept. 11 attacks, Americans accepted “government privacy invasions in the name of national security and public safety.” But in the 20 years since, the internet and connected technologies led to an increase in “corporate surveillance” and an “increasingly harmful data ecosystem.” Amid the pandemic, Americans “may be surrendering even more privacy rights for the cause of public health” and “mustn’t lose sight of the importance of privacy in safeguarding our freedom and autonomy.” Editor's note: IAPP Editorial Director Jedidiah Bracy, CIPP, reflected on the impact the Sept. 11 attacks had on privacy and data protection.
