In an op-ed for the Brennan Center for Justice, Kaylana Mueller-Hsia and Laura Hecht-Felella explore how privacy safeguards might dictate the uptake of COVID-19 at-home tests in the U.S. They write data protection "will impact Americans’ trust in this tool and thus its usefulness." Noting the minimal applicability of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, they write test providers must "take the lead in instituting adequate, transparent privacy safeguards," adding most providers "often fail to do so."
