In an op-ed for The Hill, Future of Privacy Forum CEO Jules Polonetsky, CIPP/US, and Director of Education Privacy Amelia Vance write on the unintended consequences of one state’s student privacy law. They write that out of fear, many schools stopped collecting or sharing data for a variety of reasons. While they note the importance of protecting children’s privacy, they write that “Despite the best of intentions, some efforts to protect students inadvertently undermine our schools’ ability to best serve students. We hamstring our schools and their partners with unintended consequences when we’re just trying to keep our students safe.” The pair asks that as lawmakers look to put forward privacy regulations that they anticipate all possible outcomes.
