In an op-ed for Wired, Symantec Vice President of Research Darren Shou asks, “how do we control our data once it’s been fed into the artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms that are becoming omnipresent in our lives?” He cites the EU General Data Protection Regulation's “right to be forgotten” and AI's impact on children and adolescents who have come of age in this “AI Generation,” especially as algorithms do not take into account that children make mistakes as they learn. “There are no simple answers when it comes to privacy,” Shou writes. “But there are guardrails, safety nets, and limits that can be put into place to restore order and give the public power over their own information.” (Registration may be required to access this story.)
