In an op-ed for CMSWire, Dana Simberkoff, CIPP/US, writes that the increased attention on privacy and regulatory frameworks worldwide helped elevate Facebook’s data-harvesting scandal. While the fallout from how personal data was collected, stored and shared threatened consumer trust, it also helped establish privacy by design as a critical component for companies going forward. Simberkoff writes the event heightened awareness of the EU General Data Protection Regulation, as well as eased the passage of the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018.
