In an op-ed for The Hill, George Mason University Mercatus Center Research Fellow Jennifer Huddleston writes that the one-year anniversary of the EU General Data Protection Regulation comes at no better time for the U.S., which can review the successes and pitfalls of the legislation as it sets out to create its own privacy laws. Huddleston writes that one of the biggest takeaways from the GDPR was that the cost for compliance "is not cheap" and companies may "leave the market rather than comply" if the U.S. were to go a similar path with legislation. Also, Huddleston writes that companies that paid the price to comply are still working in uncertain times as "courts and countries continue to work through interpretations, often with differing results."
