In an op-ed for The Conversation, University of Canterbury lecturer Mark Rickerby said organizations within New Zealand should learn from Foodstuffs' trial over facial recognition trial with racial bias issues. Rickerby said biometric technology "requires human-centered design to avoid misuse, bias and harm. In turn, this can help guide regulatory frameworks and standards, inform public debate on the acceptable use of AI, and support development of safer automated systems."
