In an op-ed for EurActiv.com, Alan McQuinn and Daniel Castro argue why the European Commission should repeal the EU “cookie law.” The authors detail the small amount of consumer complaints regarding cookies, as the U.K.'s "Information Commissioner’s Office received only 210 complaints regarding cookies between April 2015 and March 2016.” McQuinn and Castro cite the high cost of the cookie law as another reason why it needs to go. “The total annual cost of the directive for both compliance by European website operators and productivity losses from users is over 2 billion euros. Moreover, the directive imposes other costs on businesses and consumers,” they wrote. McQuinn and Castro also argued the law provides little benefit, adding, “By requiring websites to notify users of all cookies, the policy discourages the use of uncontroversial types of cookies that allow users to personalise their online experience.”
