In an Op-Ed for EUobserver, Nick Wallace explains why European Union policymakers should ensure the ePrivacy Regulation does not apply to internet-of-things devices. The latest ePrivacy Regulation draft does not differentiate between machine-to-machine transmissions involving human connections and those that do not, making it harder to use certain devices, such as a driver having to offer consent every time they drive through an area using a sensor. Wallace writes the EU General Data Protection Regulation is better suited to handle IoT devices. “The GDPR already provides adequate protection for the privacy of personal information transmitted by IoT devices, while devices that transmit neither personal information nor private communications between people, like air quality monitors, need not be subject to either law,” Wallace writes.
