The Directorate General of Civil Aviation’s failure to acknowledge drone privacy issues is among its various shortcomings, Shashank Reddy and Tarun Krishnakumar write in an op-ed for The Wire. “Apart from a cursory statement that ‘privacy and protection of personnel/ property/data shall be given due importance,’ no further guidance is provided,” they say. “Given the patchwork privacy protection in India, it cannot be easily assumed that existing frameworks will be adequate to address issues of privacy raised by the use of drones.” While the document’s public comment session has ended, Reddy and Krishnakumar hope that the government will listen to criticisms and adjust the draft circular accordingly.
